Hinduism is a rich tapestry of diverse deities, each holding profound significance in the spiritual landscape.
Among these, Bhairav, also known as Kashi’s Kotwal (guardian), is revered for his dual nature – the benevolent Batuk Bhairav and the fierce Kal Bhairav.
Legend has it that the three syllables of the word ‘Bhairav’ encapsulate the energies of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, symbolizing a holistic divine force.
Considered part of Shiva’s entourage, the sincere worship of Bhairav ensures protection and fulfillment of devotees’ desires, dispelling negative forces and obstacles.
Significance of Kal Bhairav Ashtami/Kal Bhairav Jayanti
On December 5th, Kal Bhairav Ashtami is celebrated, marking the manifestation of Lord Shiva in the form of Kal Bhairav during the Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month.
This auspicious day holds special importance in tantra practices, believed to grant liberation from all adversities through the worship of Kal Bhairav.
Across India, there are several renowned Kal Bhairav temples, each with its unique significance.
#1 Kal Bhairav Temple, Kashi
Nestled on the banks of the Ganges, the ancient city of Kashi (Varanasi) is renowned for the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
However, equally significant is the Kashi Kotwal, Baba Kal Bhairav.
A local saying reflects the city’s devotion, “First worship Kashi Kotwal, then proceed with your endeavors.”
The temple, located two kilometers from the Vishwanath Temple, holds the belief that nothing prospers in the city without the will of Bhairav Baba.
Residents claim that Baba Vishwanath himself relies on the protection provided by Kal Bhairav. This belief finds mention in the Mahabharata and Upanishads.
#2 Kal Bhairav Temple, Ujjain
Following Kashi, Ujjain houses the second prominent Kal Bhairav temple along the banks of the Shipra River.
Here, devotees offer a unique libation – only spirits – as a form of prasad. The mysterious aspect is that the liquor is believed to disappear magically.
The temple’s construction, attributed to the Paramara rulers a thousand years ago, exemplifies strength with massive stones forming its structure.
#3 Batuk Bhairav Temple, New Delhi
Located on Vinay Marg in Delhi, the Batuk Bhairav Temple showcases a distinctive idol situated above a well.
Pandavas, according to ancient lore, constructed this temple as the first among the temples dedicated to Bhairav.
The idol depicts Bhairav Baba with a trident and large eyes. Legend has it that Pandavas organized yajnas for the protection of their fort, repeatedly disrupted by demons.
Upon Lord Krishna’s suggestion, they established the Kilkari Baba Bhaironath Mandir, resolving the security issues.
#4 Kilkari Baba Bhaironath Mandir, Delhi
Situated outside the Old Fort in Delhi, the Kilkari Baba Bhaironath Mandir is believed to have been established by the Pandavas to ensure the fort’s protection.
