According to Hindu mythology, the 51 holy places, known as Peethaas, originated when the body parts of Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva, were scattered across the Indian subcontinent.
Sati, an incarnation of Adya-Shakti Kali, was the daughter of Daksha Prajapati, who once organized a grand Yajna (ritual) and invited everyone except Lord Shiva.
Sati, determined to attend, went against Shiva’s advice.
At the Yajna, Daksha insulted Sati and Shiva, leading Sati to self-immolate.
Upon learning of Sati’s death, Shiva transformed into a destructive form, along with Maha-Kali and Birbhadra.
They wreaked havoc and destruction at the Yajna site, carrying Sati’s body on Shiva’s shoulder.
To save the world, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to dismember Sati’s body, and wherever a piece fell became a Shakti Peetha, or a sacred place.
The number of sacred peethas mentioned in various scriptures varies, but primarily there are 51 well-known and widely recognized peethas.
According to the Shiv Charitra, there are 51 Shakti Peethas.
As per the Kalika Purana, there are 26 Shakti Peethas.
In the Sri Devi Bhagavat Purana, it is mentioned that there are 108 Shakti Peethas.
According to the Tantra Chudamani and Markandeya Purana, there are 52 Shakti Peethas.
In the Sri Devi Bhagavat, the 108 Shakti Peethas described by Sage Vyasa in response to King Janmejaya’s inquiry are as follows:
