Story Behind Vijaya Ekadashi
Once upon a time, during Lord Rama’s exile with Sita and Laxmana, the demon King Ravana kidnaped Sita, leaving Rama devastated. A loyal vulture named Jatayu tried to save Sita but was fatally injured. Before his last breath, Jatayu informed Rama of Sita’s kidnapping.
Determined to rescue his beloved wife, Rama took help from Sugriva, the monkey king, who offered his support along with his monkey army. Hanuman, Rama’s devout follower, discovered Sita imprisoned in Lanka’s Ashoka Vatika and conveyed Rama’s message to her.
Facing the daunting obstacle of the extended ocean infested with crocodiles, Rama sought guidance from the sage Bakadalbhya. Bakadalbhya advised Rama to observe Vijaya Ekadashi, a sacred day of fasting and prayers believed to grant victory over obstacles.

Vijaya Ekadashi Rituals
On the day before Ekadasi, known as Dashami, prepare a pot filled with water. Decorate it with mango tree leaves and place it on a mound of seven grains. On the morning of Ekadasi, decorate the pot with flower garlands and Sandalwood paste.
Place a coconut, barley, and pomegranate on the lid. Worship the pot with offerings of flowers, a ghee lamp, sandalwood paste, and food. Put a golden idol of Lord Sri Narayan on top of the lid. Stay awake near the pot throughout the night.

On Vijaya Ekadasi, replace the flowers and worship the pot again with offerings. Stay awake in awareness through the night. On Dwadashi, take the pot to a river or pond, worship it, and offer it along with all the ingredients to a Brahmin. Throughout the rituals, sing and chant praises of the Lord with complete devotion.
